Trip Tracking
How automatic and manual trip tracking works in Magica.
Manual tracking
The simplest way to record a trip:
- From the Dashboard, tap the "ON" shaped button
- Magica starts recording GPS location, speed and distance in real time
- During the trip you can see live data on screen or on the Lock Screen (Live Activity)
- When you arrive at your destination, tap "Stop Trip" or wait for it to end automatically when you exit the vehicle.
- The trip is automatically saved with all collected data
Automatic tracking
Magica can automatically detect when you're driving and start tracking without touching the phone:
- Enable automatic tracking in Settings > Tracking
- Magica monitors the device's motion sensors
- When it detects movement consistent with driving, tracking starts automatically
- When you stop for a configurable period (default 5 minutes), the trip closes automatically
Automatic tracking uses more battery than manual tracking, as GPS stays active in the background.
Adding a trip manually
If you forgot to track a trip, you can add it later:
- From the Dashboard, tap the "Your Trips" button and go to the Trips section
- Tap the "+" button in the top right
- Fill in all the fields
- Save the trip
Importing trips
You can import trips from external files:
- From the Dashboard, tap the "Your Trips" button and go to the Trips section
- Tap the "..." button in the top right
- Select "Import a trip" and choose the CSV file to import
- For backup, go to the vehicle detail from the dashboard instead
- Tap the "..." button in the top right
- Select "Manage backup"
- On the screen, scroll down and tap "Import a backup"
- CSV — Import from spreadsheets with custom field mapping
- Magica Backup — Restore a complete app backup
Bluetooth BLE tracking
You can associate a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) device with your vehicle to trigger automatic trip tracking when the device is nearby:
- Go to Account > App settings and tracking > Trip tracking
- Select "Bluetooth BLE" as the tracking mode
- Tap the Bluetooth device configuration row
- A list of nearby BLE devices will appear — select yours and save
- When Magica detects the device nearby, it will start tracking automatically
The BLE device must be powered on and within range. Magica checks signal strength (RSSI) every 3 seconds to determine if the device is near.
iBeacon tracking
If your BLE device is an iBeacon (e.g., BlueCharm, Kontakt.io, Estimote), it may not appear in the standard BLE scan because iOS handles iBeacon devices differently. Magica supports iBeacons with a dedicated section in the BLE configurator:
- Go to the BLE device configuration screen (as above)
- Scroll down to the "iBeacon" section
- Tap "Add iBeacon manually"
- Enter the Proximity UUID of your beacon (you can find it in the beacon manufacturer's app)
- Optionally enter the Major and Minor values (leave empty to match any)
- Tap "Add", then select the beacon and save
iBeacon monitoring works in the background and does not require Bluetooth to be enabled on your phone — it uses location services instead. Make sure you have granted "Always" location permission to Magica.
Live Activity
During an active trip, Magica shows a Live Activity on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island with:
- Distance traveled
- Driving time
- Current speed
- Estimated consumption
